The Alabama State / District 5 Open Checker Tournament was represents by 33 players from eleven states: 10 from TN, 5 from AL, and NC, 3 from MS, 2 from TX, GA, & MO, and 1 each from OH, LA, IL, & WV.

Congratulations to Frank Davis who played strong considering he recently spent 6 months in the hospital and won the 2009 District 5 Championship.

Congratulations to Larry Pollard and Josh Armstrong who are the 2009 Alabama State Co-Champions. They tied in points and agreed to share the Alabama State Co-Championship before honor points were determined. This is Pollard's eleventh Alabama State Title.

Total Prize Fund was $1,780.00 split $890 Masters, $555 Majors, and $335 Minors, paying completely thru all division entries. Numerous door prices, welcome bags where given out from local merchants. Many donated merchandise, money, food, prizes, etc. Alex Moiseyev donated a copy of his latest book "Sixth" to be raffled off with proceeds going toward prize fund. Earle Sweatmon won this. I won a nice Checker Blanket as a door prize.

Ratings from WDCF January/June 2009 - No. 4 T separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points. Win is 2 points, Draw is 1, Bye is 3. GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, CM for Candidate Master, WIM stands for Women's International Master.

The tournament opening ceremony presented all players a warm welcome to Haleyville by Mayor Pro-tem, "Bicycle" Richard Bittinger, and Mayor Ken Suneri dropping by later.
We appreciate Kelly Cummings, Larry Pollard's daughter for helping with door prizes, welcome bags, refreshments/drinks/fruit, large cooler of drinks, bottle water, catered vegetable & dip platter, an assorted cold cut sandwich tray available throughout our tournament.
For those who haven't seen this sign recognizing Larry Pollard as their hometown Master Checker Player, a SIGN,entering and leaving the community of Brilliant, Alabama.
We also appreciated the presence of Mr. Ronald and Emogene Raburn and her sister & husband Horace & Esther Mann at the tournament who are both daughters of late Basil G. Case.
